Engraving Terms & Definitions

Brass Cutter Knob:
This cutting knob is designed to lock the graver in a fixed position. Used specifically for creating cutouts or to engrave on hard surfaces. Can be used with both a carbide cutter and a diamond drag.

Burnisher:
These are specially ground diamond drag gravers used for very specific applications, i.e. glass engraving, stone engraving, etc.

Carbide Cutter:
This engraving tool is used to engrave or cut on soft materials. This tool physically cuts out material when engraving; used with plastic, wood, wax, soap, etc. also used when cutting out shapes or names in metal.

Center Vice:
This is the attachment that lies in the center of engraving machines to hold smaller items or slightly curved items for engraving.

Cup Cone:
Used for Engraving cylindrical items using a rotary attachment; for holding the open end of a cup, glass, etc. These come in different sizes depending on the size of your inside diameter of your item.

Diamond Drag:
This engraving tool is used to engrave on most materials, it is used to scratch the surface: all metals, glass, crystals, etc.

Engrave:
To chase (letters, designs, etc.) on a hard surface, as of metal, stone, or the end grain of wood: She had the jeweler engrave her name on the back of the watch.

Face Plate:
Used for engraving cylindrical items using the tailstock; for holding the back end of a cup, glass etc. These come in different sizes depending on the size of the base of the cylindrical item.

Jigs:
These are work holders designed to hold items for engraving. These can very in shape and size depending on what you are engraving.

Light Touch Knob:
Balanced spring cutter knob for use with diamond drag gravers. Gives the engraving a light touch by creating give when the diamond drag hits the surface. Can be used with all materials and with both the diamond drag or carbide cutter.

Rotary:
Engraving method using the ‘rotary motor’ to engrave cylindrical items. This allows the cylindrical item to spin 360° for engraving around the entire piece.

Swarf Extractor:
This attachment is used to recapture precious metals and keep your engraver clean. The extractor attaches directly to a vacuum to ensure that shavings are captured.

Tail Stock:
This attachment, used with both the GEM-RX and the GEM-VX machines, slides on the rail to hold the faceplate for support during cylindrical engraving.
